9 Early Symptoms of Diabetes

Diabetes is considered as one of the leading causes of deaths in the Philippines. Out of the 382 million cases, 3.2 million diabetes cases are found in the Philippines. In addition, it is projected that the cases will rise to 7.7 million cases when 2030 arrives.

How will you know if you are at risk of acquiring diabetes? There are times wherein the warning signs are mild that you won't be able to notice them. Some people won't even notice until they experience complications of the condition. However, most of its early symptoms are recognizable if you are properly equipped with the basic knowledge about diabetes. The following symptoms are as follows.

  1. Hunger and Fatigue - When your body doesn't make enough insulin, one's energy decreases. Because of this, the person has a bigger chance of experiencing hunger and tiredness than usual.
  2. Frequent urination - An average person pees between four and seven times in 24 hours. However, people with diabetes have the tendency to pee a lot more. Your body's glucose normally passes through your kidneys. But, when diabetes pushes your blood sugar up, your body will try to get rid of the extra by making more urine, thus a lot more peeing.
  3. Excessive thirst - In connection to one's frequent urination, the person will definitely be dehydrated that will lead to one drinking more fluids.
  4. Lack of interest and concentration - Once you feel fatigued, one's body will not function properly that will eventually be the cause of one's lack of interest and concentration.
  5. Slow-healing of wounds - High blood sugar can affect one's blood flow and cause nerve damage that will make it hard for your body to heal wounds.
  6. Blurred vision - High levels of blood sugar can pull fluid from your tissues especially on your eyes. This will affect one's vision problems.
  7. Pain or numbness in your feet or legs - This is also a result of nerve damage.
  8. Nausea and vomiting

According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), type 1 diabetes cases cannot be prevented for the condition is usually triggered by environmental factors. However, one can prevent acquiring type 2 diabetes with certain lifestyle changes.

  • 30 minutes of exercise can reduce one’s chances of having diabetes
  • Eating a balanced and healthy meal
  • Quit your smoking habit
  • Change your sleeping pattern and make it at least 8 hours a day
