5 Tips to Prevent Kidney Problem

There are two factors that contributes to kidney failure – lifestyle and family history. Kidneys are one of the major organs in your body. The body cannot function without them. Kidneys filter toxins and excess salt in your body, balance your body’s water level, and regulates acid, red blood cell and blood pressure.

For health related issues, you need to pay attention to high blood pressure and diabetes because these two are the dangers to your kidneys.

  • If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, make sure to have it under control. If you are unsure if you have any of these to, schedule your checkup to a healthcare provider.
  • Regular tests – there are 3 types of tests that will identify the health of your kidneys:
    • Urine test will show if you have too much blood, sugar and protein in your urine.
    • Blood pressure reading will check if your blood pressure is high. It shows the amount of waste from muscle activity.
    • If kidneys are not functioning well, there will be a rise in creatinine level.

For lifestyle, there are things that you can do to lower your risk of kidney failure.

  1. Drink plenty of water
  • If the body has enough fluids, the kidneys will be able to flush out excess salt and eliminate toxins from our body. 8 glasses of water a day is enough for your kidneys to function well, but for people who already have kidney stones, it is advisable to drink up to 3 liters a day. You can also try drinking coconut water as it shows significant help for your kidneys.
  1. Lower salt intake
  • If your diet is sodium-rich, it will increase your blood pressure and generate the formation of kidney stones. One teaspoon a day is good enough for your body. Avoid eating junk food for they contain high amount of sodium.
  1. Urinate
  • Urinate if you feel like you need to go. Do not resist the urge to do so for your body undergoes filtration. This filtration is essential for your kidneys to function well. The excess amount of water and wastes are stored in your urinary bladder that is why you need to excrete this by going to the restroom.
  1. Exercise
  • Obesity is narrowly related to problems on the kidneys. The chances of developing kidney problems doubles when a person is overweight, according to researchers.
  1. Avoid smoking and alcohol
  • Smoking can cause heart problems that can complicate kidney problems. Although it does not directly causes kidney problem, smoking causes the kidney function to reduce. Excess alcohol can disrupt the balance of electrolyte in the body and hormonal control that impacts your kidney functions.
