Sunburn is caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun. The skin appears to be red after a few hours, becomes painful when touched, and may take several days to heal. You may feel weak and feverish. Sunburn varies from mild to severe and if not treated well, it may lead to skin cancer. That’s why we’ve listed down tips on how to treat sunburn.
- Cool down
- Get out of the sun and take a cold bath. You can apply cold compress or use ice water to make you feel refreshed and comfortable. Don’t shower too long for it can dry the skin. Also, avoid harsh soaps to prevent the skin from damaging even more.
- Moisturize your skin
- Right after you shower or when the skin is damp, apply aloe vera to soothe the skin and to take the sting out. It is best to apply it cold to make you feel better. You can also use gentle moisturizing lotion to keep your skin from burning and peeling for the next few days.
- Reduce irritation
- Take anti-inflammatory drug such as ibuprofen, aspirin or naproxen to reduce the pain from the burning sensation and irritation. You can continue taking medicine until the burn feels better.
- Stay hydrated
- Sunburn makes your skin dehydrated so it is important to drink plenty of water to replenish your fluids on your body. This will help you bring back the moisture from the inside. You can also drink sports drink to help replenish electrolytes and make your skin heals faster.
- Apply sunblock
- Don’t forget to wear sunblock when going out to protect your skin and to prevent more skin damage. Getting sunburn twice makes your skin more vulnerable on the sun and may even cause you premature aging or skin cancer.
