Signs and Symptoms of Japanese Encephalitis

The Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) shows itself with signs which are associated with common illnesses. It is difficult to determine whether or not it is indeed Japanese Encephalitis since the most common symptoms are:

  • Mild headache
  • Fever
  • Sometimes without any apparent symptoms

Even though it might not show itself, study shows that only 1 out of 250 cases results in severe clinical illnesses. In any case that it results to a severe clinical illness, it is characterized by:

  • High fever
  • Severe headache
  • Tremors
  • Vomiting
  • Convulsions (for children)
  • Swelling of the testicles (for children)
  • Stiff neck
  • Spastic Paralysis
  • Disorientation
  • Coma
  • Seizures
  • Spastic paralysis

The time of infections until the illness typically occurs 5 to 15 days. Neurological defects such as deafness, uncontrollable emotions and weakness on one side of the body may happen with the brain is involved. The mortality rate of Japanese Encephalitis Virus is 30%, according to data from the World Health Organization. But, children will likely be more at risk.

Japanese Encephalitis has no specific treatment. When a person is diagnosed with the disease, the most common medication procedure would be to bring the patient to the hospital for close monitoring. Rest, fluids, and pain relievers are used to help stabilize the patient. Close monitoring is also required. There may be no cure, but there is an effective vaccine that can prevent infection.
